2012 Youth Tour

Montgomery Youth Tour Participants:

The 2012 Montgomery Youth Tour was held March 6 - 8. It boasted approximately 137 high school students representing 16 cooperatives from around the state.

  • Participated in leadership sessions focusing on the importance of teamwork with guest speaker Cea Cohen-Elliot
  • Had the pleasure to meet and take pictures with the 2012 Republican Presidential Candidate, Newt Gingrich
  • Attended a special dinner where they engaged in a question and answer session with leading legislators in the Alabama House of Representatives
  • Toured the Rosa Parks Museum, the First White House of the Confederacy, the Civil Rights Memorial, the Alabama State House and the Alabama Capitol

Washington D.C. Youth Tour

Tombigbee Electric selected Jacob Davis, Hamilton High School, to participate in the 2012 Washington Youth Tour June 15-21. This years tour group includes 47 student participants and 9 chaperones. Alabama’s student delegation joined nearly 1,600 other high-school students from around the country for the activity-filled week. To be selected, Jacob was required to write an essay on his experiences at the Montgomery Youth Tour and he was interviewed by other Youth Tour Leaders on those experiences and about what cooperatives are and how they work.

Highlights of the Washington Youth Tour trip included:

  • Visits to Capitol Hill to speak with U.S. Senators and the entire Alabama delegation of representatives to discuss relevant issues. 
  • Sightseeing. Students tour the following attractions in the Washington, D.C., area: Arlington Cemetery; Mount Vernon; the FDR Memorial; Jefferson Memorial; the Vietnam, Korean, World War II and Iwo Jima memorials; the Lincoln Memorial; and the Holocaust Museum. Students also attend a performance of the comedy “Shear Madness” at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Students love attractions such as Madame Toussauds Wax Museum and the Newseum as well.
  • Rural Electric Youth Day. In addition to taking in the sights and sounds of the nation’s capital, all the state groups convene for Rural Electric Youth Day to learn from public figures and other inspirational speakers. During Youth Day, a highlight of the weeklong Youth Tour, students listen to inspirational speakers who will challenge individuals of all ages that despite difficult circumstances, you can take response-ability and be empowered.
